My painting "Mood Indigo" was inspired by the same song, written in 1930 by Duke Ellington, composed for a radio broadcast in October of that year. Originally titled "Dreamy Blues," and the original tune came from New Orleans and was titled "Mexican Blues." It is in the top 100 American Jazz Standards because the song has an unusual musical arrangement that took the trumpet, trombone, and clarinet lines and inverted them, so the voice of the horn is the top register, the trombone in the center with the clarinet as the lowest.

This created what was called a mike-tone, an effect generated by the overtones of the clarinet and trombone. The mike-tone gives the illusion of a fourth voice. When I conceived the piece, I was struck by the sadness of the lyrics, and yet the music was so calming.  I painted this in one sitting, the mike-tone made me think of a yellow-green to incorporate into the painting along with Prussian Blue.  Duke Ellington said of the composition, "Mood Indigo" is just a story about a little girl and a little boy. They are about eight, and the girl loves the boy. They never speak of it, of course, but she likes the way he wears his hat. Every day he shows up to her house at a certain The time, and she sits in her window and waits. Then one day he doesn't come. "Mood Indigo," tells how she feels.

"Mood Indigo" has been featured in over 20 films as of 2014 and numerous television shows. It is as unique now as it was when it was played over the radio on October 17th, 1930. It is considered one of the most exceptional jazz standards ever written.
